The louisiana.edu site is really good because it has an encyclopedia of cajun terms including recipes for gumbo and etouffee. mmmmm !!

On a sadder note i found this post katrina interview with Charmaine Neville, daughter of Charles Neville, sax player for the Neville Brothers Band.

I have spent time with Charmaine, Reggie and Asa and my heart broke when i saw the interview. Give them a hand and order a CD or go see one of their shows. I guarantee you will not be disappointed. These musicians are some of the best in New Orleans and Charmaine's voice is like eating a beignet with a cup of Cafe du Monde coffee.

Let's not forget these beautiful people and their friends, family and neighbors on the gulf coast. Make sure you contribute again and bug the hell outta your congressman when you read something new about FEMA's failures.

This isn't going away anytime soon and in this media world of soundbites it is too easy to forget the many who are still suffering.

I discovered their site in 2002 when it was the European Body Painting Festival
and was hooked. I think every town should have one. Just one day to have some fun celebrating how we perceive the human body.

Sitting here with a cup of mate. We finally have the marine layer back this morning. Cool and gray. I'm not really much for either as an all day thing unless it is sprinkled with lots of female sunshine. You know, smiles and other facial expressions and all that feminine energy from silly to sexual to serious that comes in all those insanely different packages of curves and movements.

Think I will go out for some sun today and later sit and continue trying to learn a couple of Stephen Stills songs. Alternate tuning DDDDAD for Suite Judy Blue Eyes and Wordgame. I've already figured the chords to Acadienne off his new CD so now have to start putting words to it. Don't know how I will do with the cajun words. For those who don't know Cajun is the way the word Acadian is pronounced after years of living and loving in the heat and humidity of a swamp.
The Acadians are originally French Canadians who were booted out by the British.

tres afternoon

sitting here sending urls to my dad. such a lovable person packaged in an emotionally unavailable lifetime.
the urls are about ladd air force base in fairbanks, alaska. 130 days to go 'til itidarod! i wanted to see if it passed thru fairbanks where i first showed up on this planet or where i was born for those with less fertile imaginations.
anyway. i am also watching a jackson browne dvd. going home it's called. i love netflix.

music moves me. i can feel what a songwriter is singing about. i see images when i hear their words and music. i make little videos in my head. had a three song video worked out back when i heard paul simon's mother and child reunion LP. MTV didn't exist back then. ahead of my time i guess.

on dvd i can not only hear their voice but see facial expressions and body language. then there is also the chance to pick up some fingerwork on a fretboard although most camera operators are not guitar players and frustrate those of us who are.

she told me about the characters she has encountered on the island and that she may start a novel about them. she also wrote about the new love she left here and how she is surprisingly o.k. with that. she's exchanging emails with him and growing.

so many more tools and opportunities for her generation, but still the work of incorporating it into who she is.

it's morning here in so. cal.
clear sky and hot already because we have wind coming in from the desert.
i live 3 blocks from the ocean and usually the wind is reversed.
we usually wake up to a marine layer fog which burns off by 10 a.m.
and our mornings are much cooler. it's gonna be a hot one.

just got stephen stills' new cd. it's really a great cd. his writing and guitar work and vocals are at their best. i realize not many have followed his solo
career and at times it was disappointing but he really pulled this one off.
well enuf for now.
