Al'right petit acadiennes here it is as promised, a bit about zydeco and cajun music and culture. To save space i am gonna turn you on to some websites that will catch you up.
Cajun History: http://ccet.louisiana.edu/03a_Cultural_Tourism_Files/01.02_The_People/Acadians.html
Zydeco/Cajun Music:
http://www.lsue.edu/acadgate/music/history.htm
You can google the artists above to find out more about them.
The louisiana.edu site is really good because it has an encyclopedia of cajun terms including recipes for gumbo and etouffee. mmmmm !!
On a sadder note i found this post katrina interview with Charmaine Neville, daughter of Charles Neville, sax player for the Neville Brothers Band.
Here is the URL and the URL for her band site.
I have spent time with Charmaine, Reggie and Asa and my heart broke when i saw the interview. Give them a hand and order a CD or go see one of their shows. I guarantee you will not be disappointed. These musicians are some of the best in New Orleans and Charmaine's voice is like eating a beignet with a cup of Cafe du Monde coffee.
Let's not forget these beautiful people and their friends, family and neighbors on the gulf coast. Make sure you contribute again and bug the hell outta your congressman when you read something new about FEMA's failures.
This isn't going away anytime soon and in this media world of soundbites it is too easy to forget the many who are still suffering.

And if you don't want to make your own gumbo click on the Sauceboss link to the right and checkout my friend Bill Wharton. He makes gumbo on stage while they play and serves it up after the show. It is truly a religious experience. For you Parrotheads who haven't discovered Bill yet, Jimmy sings about Bill on his Beachhouse on the Moon CD--check out track 7-- I Will Play For Gumbo!
Of course this post would not be complete without mentioning Tobacco Road, Miami, FL the world's best blues bar celebrating their 93rd birthday this month.
This is where i first heard anything cajun or zydeco and the first time eating gumbo! Thanks Pat, Mark, Graham and IKO-IKO, John Wenzel, Roach and Kay.
